Be careful with the deceptive use of Chip-based Citizen Identification Card

Since 2021, the Ministry of Public Security has begun implementing the issuance of Citizen Identification Card (commonly known as e-ID Card). The e-ID Card with an embedded chip serves as the personal identification document for Vietnamese citizens, used for identification, verifying personal identity, and as a key to access citizens' information in the national database system. With the electronic chip-embedded e-ID Card, citizens can carry out public administrative transactions and financial dealings.

Therefore, individuals need to be cautious to avoid the risk of exposing sensitive personal information and prevent malicious exploitation of this type of personal identification document.

The potential risks associated with losing or exposing the e-ID Cards

The front side of the chip-embedded e-ID Card contains a QR code containing all Personal Identifiable Information (PII) of the cardholder, such as the personal identification number, previous national ID number, and permanent address. The electronic chip of the e-ID Card holds more information beyond the QR code about an individual, including personal images, information about parents, spouses, and more. Additionally, most smartphones available on the market today integrate Near-Field Communications (NFC) technology to easily read information from the chip.

Therefore, if individuals fail to properly secure their e-ID Card, malicious entities can easily exploit it to apply for loans from financial institutions or register phone numbers for fraudulent purposes. This behavior can subject the victim to various risks and burdens, such as shouldering debts for loans they did not take.

Some preventive methods to mitigate these risks

Shinhan Finance advises its customers to enhance vigilance and take proactive measures to protect themselves from the risks associated with the illegally use of personal identification documents, including:

-Refrain from posting or sharing images of the e-ID Cards on social media.

-Store the e-ID Cards and other personal documents, avoiding leaving them in public places or within sight of others.

-Never lend the e-ID Cards to anyone for any purpose without maintaining control over it.

-Avoid using the e-ID Card number or date of birth as passwords for banking or financial applications.

-Avoid installing apps with unclear origins or disclosing personal information or e-ID Card images on these apps to prevent the risk of personal information theft.

-Verify the identity when receiving calls, messages, or emails from financial institutions by directly contacting them through the information published on their official website.

-Refrain from buying, selling, lending, or renting out the e-ID Cards under any circumstances.

-Report to the nearest police station if there is suspicion of identity theft or in the event of losing the e-ID Cards, for necessary assistance.
