Fraud Warning – Shinhan Finance Customers Should Take Caution
Recently, there has been an increase in sophisticated fraud schemes in which criminals impersonate financial institutions, banks, or government agencies to steal information and appropriate customers’ money. Shinhan Vietnam Finance Company Ltd. (Shinhan Finance) advises customers to remain highly vigilant and proactively protect their personal information.
Common fraud methods
Impersonating banks or government agencies: criminals make phone calls, send text messages, or emails that include full name, ID number, account number, etc., to create the impression of contacting the “right person.” They then often claim “your account has bad debt,” “verification is required to avoid account suspension,” and trick customers into clicking fake links or providing OTPs.
Loan, refinancing, or credit card limit scams: criminals often target students and workers. They pose as “finance companies” claiming the customer has bad debt and demand fees to “clear the record,” in fact to steal money.
Impersonating acquaintances: using available data, criminals easily pretend to be relatives or colleagues to borrow money or request transfers.
Legal intimidation: some criminals impersonate police, prosecutors, or courts, calling to threaten customers with alleged involvement in “money laundering” and demanding transfers to a so-called “safe account.”
Sending malicious messages/emails: criminals may send fake SMS, Zalo, or emails impersonating banks, requesting information verification with malicious links attached to steal additional data.
Who are the common targets?
According to authorities, high-risk groups include:
Students: easily lured by tuition loan offers, quick-paying part-time jobs, or credit card limit increases.
Workers and office employees: often receive fake debt notices or credit warnings via email or text messages.
Elderly people with little tech knowledge: vulnerable to scam calls impersonating banks or police; lacking skills to check links or applications.
People with limited IT knowledge: at risk of clicking strange links, downloading fake apps, and losing login credentials.
Recommendations from Shinhan Finance to customers
Never provide passwords, OTP/SmartOTP codes, or account information to anyone via phone, email, or text.
Do not access or download applications from unknown links sent via SMS, Zalo, email, or online advertisements.
If you receive calls requesting information, loan verification, or money transfers, always verify through Shinhan Finance’s official channels before making any transaction.
Students and workers must not trust ads such as “clear CIC debt.” Elderly customers should be guided by family members on how to refuse strange calls and only contact the bank directly when necessary.
Customers should regularly update themselves with warnings from the police, official media, and Shinhan Finance’s official communication channels.
